Originally written for Joplin's play/musical. A project he dedicated several years to with the help of Director, Meghan Finn and his musical partners Kevin Farell and Lorenzo Wolff.

Two shy romantics and outward recluses - disillusioned by school and desperate for meaning. United by their obsession with British music—from Depeche Mode to The Psychedelic Furs—one played synth, the other sang in his broodiest bloody accent while strumming a guitar. Bored beyond their means, they plotted small acts of rebellion against the fluorescent quiet of their lives. A coming-of-age story for the emotionally literate and terminally out of place.

Lyrics

The guardrail marks the grave
where you and I were saved before
We both gave up on God
You held your breath and smiled

You walked the world a while and we
We tied ourselves in knots,
held vigil in the hall,
thought stars might finally fall
from the weight of wishing you'd
pull through
When it hurts you,
when it hurts you,
when when it hurts you, it hurts me too

You rolled the silverware
I stacked up plastic chairs and we
walked around for hours
to clear our heads again
Enough fools without a plan
and we're lost in details
and we have so few
When it hurts you,
when it hurts you,
when when it hurts you, it hurts me too

I saw your text come through
I nearly cracked the screen just to answer back at you,
but like a signal lost at sea,
That's it you ghosted me

When it hurts you,
when it hurts you
When when when it hurts you, it hurts me too
When it hurts you
When when it hurts you
When it hurts you
When when it hurts you
When it hurts you
When when it hurts you
When it hurts you
When when it hurts you, it hurts me, it hurts you, it hurts me too
