My friend Kevin Farrell is a Julliard trained musician/composer. He was the musical director of a play/musical we were working out right before the pandemic. Originally I wanted it to be an "Instagram Opera" and Kevin brilliantly molded the shape of what that might sound like. Eventually it grew and became a full-blown theater production (in theory) and if it had ever gone beyond a table-read or two, I think Kevin would have gotten the majority of the credit of why this thing might have worked. Fun fact, I met Kevin because he was my daughter's band teacher at her school. He taught her upright bass - which she still plays!

Lyrics

The guardrail marks the grave
Where you and I were saved before
We both gave up on God.
You held your breath and smiled.
You woke the world a while and we
We tied ourselves in knots,
Held vigil in the hall,
Thought stars might finally fall
From the weight of wishing you'd
Pull through.

When it hurts you,
When it hurts you,
When when it hurts you, it hurts me too.

You rolled the silverware.
I stacked up plastic chairs and we
We'd walk around for hours
To clear our heads again.
Enough falls without a plan.
We're lost in details we
Had so few.
When it hurts you,
When it hurts you,
When when it hurts you, it hurts me too.

I saw your text come through.
I nearly cracked the screen just to answer back at you,
But like a signal lost at sea.
That's it, you ghosted me.
When it hurts you.
When it hurts you.
When when it hurts you, it hurts me too.
When it hurts you,
When it hurts you.
When it hurts you.
When it hurts you.
When it hurts you.
When it hurts you, it hurts me too.
